The MIT Tech Review AI report points to a critical, and arguably under-examined, tension in enterprise AI adoption. While confidence is reportedly high for well-defined technical tasks, the real value—and risk—lies in agents making judgment calls that affect business outcomes. The report's finding that a lack of business context is a primary barrier indicates that the next major challenge isn't building more capable agents, but building the data and knowledge systems to inform them.
In our view, the current focus on automating technical workflows may be a necessary stepping stone, but it risks creating a false sense of readiness for the more ambiguous strategic decisions executives ultimately hope to automate.
