As NVIDIA's blog post frames it, the push for 800 VDC is a necessary evolution for AI factories hitting power density limits. In our view, the announcement is as much about ecosystem control as it is about efficiency. By co-developing a standard through OCP with major cloud players, NVIDIA is positioning its reference designs as the de facto blueprint, potentially steering a significant portion of future data center spending toward its compatible hardware ecosystem.
The success of this standard will depend less on the technical merits—which are sound—and more on whether competing infrastructure vendors and smaller cloud operators adopt it or seek alternatives.
